La previsione di Marx di un futuro socialista si fondava sul presupposto che la scienza e la tecnologia industriale avrebbero reso finalmente possibile per la società produrre beni materiali con tale abbondanza da rendere le differenze sociali non necessarie, e mettere alla portata di tutti il dignitoso tempo libero richiesto per la ricerca della cultura alta.
